The secret to successful home working
VirtualExecEd Co-Founder Lee Chalmers shares her top tips for those who had never worked from home before.
I’ve been working from home for 16 years, ever since I started Authentic Living and I’ve learned a few things about being efficient when on your own. Here are my top tips.
Get ready to go to work. Get up, have breakfast, even go out to collect coffee and then come back to your desk ready to start. Maybe just make coffee from home if you are self-isolating.
Make sure to schedule a coffee with a friend every couple of days. Hmm, I see a theme here, coffee and human contact. OK, call someone, even though we all hate calls, urgh.
Don’t get distracted by the laundry that needs done, the hoovering, that picture that could be straightened. Pretend you have that weird house blindness that some people you live with might have when they can’t see any housework that needs done.
Define the end of your working day. Being self-employed or working from home means the work NEVER ends and it is in your house. You will never finish all your work, there is always more, just cut off at a certain point.
Get a nice chair and a matching dog. No particular reason.
Nobody is going to swing by your desk and tell you you are doing a fab job so you need to praise and reward yourself. See chair above.
More coffee.
